Mother Loses Unborn Baby After 18-Wheeler Cargo Strikes SUV on I-30 in Garland, TX
Garland, TX (June 24, 2026) – A mother lost her unborn baby and is in serious condition after cargo from an 18-wheeler struck her family's SUV on I-30 in Garland on Sunday night, June 22.
A sedan and an 18-wheeler carrying paper rolls weighing approximately 6,000 pounds each were traveling westbound on I-30 when they collided. The impact caused the 18-wheeler to strike the center concrete barrier, sending several rolls of cargo into the eastbound lanes, where they struck an eastbound SUV.
Four people were in the SUV, including two children ages 5 and 12. The mother lost her unborn baby in the crash and remains in serious condition. Both children are also in serious condition.
No charges had been filed at the time of this report.Authorities are still investigating.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and hope the mother and both children make as full a recovery as possible.
What Legal Options Does a Family Have After a Crash Involving Truck Cargo in Garland, TX?
Families may have significant legal options under Texas law, as a crash caused by cargo separating from a commercial vehicle often involves multiple potentially liable parties beyond just the drivers initially involved in the collision.
Unlike many standard motor vehicle accidents, commercial trucking cases frequently require investigators to examine issues related to vehicle maintenance, cargo handling, and regulatory compliance in addition to the events of the crash itself.
As the investigation develops, one of the central questions often becomes whether the cargo was properly secured before transport began. When heavy materials become projectile hazards following a collision, concerns may arise regarding compliance with federal commercial vehicle regulations governing cargo securement.
If investigators determine that the load was inadequately secured, legal responsibility may extend beyond the truck driver to include the trucking company or even a separate loading company that prepared the cargo before the trip began.
Beyond questions of liability, the losses suffered by the family must also be carefully evaluated. The loss of an unborn child represents one of the most devastating outcomes a family can experience following a vehicle collision, and Texas law may allow compensation related to this type of loss, although the specific legal framework can vary depending on the circumstances and the stage of pregnancy involved.
At the same time, the mother's serious injuries and the injuries sustained by the children represent separate but closely connected claims that may need to be evaluated individually based on the specific physical, emotional, and financial impact experienced by each family member. Medical treatment needs, recovery timelines, and long-term effects can differ significantly from one person to another, even when they were involved in the same incident.
Given the involvement of a commercial trucking operation, these cases often require a detailed investigation into cargo securement practices, company safety procedures, and compliance with federal transportation regulations governing heavy loads.
A lawyer may be able to help the family identify all potentially responsible parties, including the trucking company and any third-party loading service, preserve critical evidence related to how the cargo was secured, and pursue compensation that reflects the full scope of their losses.
